The Leadbetter Bill in the UK Parliament has completed the Committee Stage and will be voted on in the next few weeks. Our MP has not committed to oppose the bill and will decide soon how she will vote. Many organisations have expressed concerns about the numerous attempts to include explicit safeguards to protect vulnerable people which were rejected by Bill supporters at Committee Stage. This decision to reject countless such amendments at Committee Stage was an intentional choice, revealing a deliberate preference for a loose Bill, which allows for future expansion, over a tight law with explicit safeguards. Given the expansion of similar laws elsewhere, this ought to ring significant alarm bells. Please write to Joani Reid asking her to oppose the bill. She can be contacted at joani.reid.mp@parliament.uk
